Our Impact
Our Approach
Bee U NYC has multi-year data via annual alumni and pre- and post-program surveys that back our approach. Our organization uses urban beekeeping as a gateway to engage young people in environmental education, leadership development, and green career pathways.
-
Bee U NYC measures participants’ understanding of environmental concepts such as climate change, biodiversity, food systems, pollination, renewable energy, and sustainability. Through hands-on learning and environmental education, participants build a stronger understanding of how environmental challenges impact their communities and the role they can play in addressing them.
-
Participants develop practical beekeeping skills and knowledge through direct interaction with live honey bee colonies. This includes understanding bee biology and life cycles, identifying hive components, recognizing signs of colony health or stress, learning about colony collapse disorder, and safely conducting hive inspections, including removing and handling frames.
-
Bee U NYC evaluates how participants engage with their communities through environmental stewardship and Environmental Action Projects. This includes measuring the effectiveness of hands-on projects, participants’ sense of civic responsibility, and whether the experience leads to a longer-term commitment to environmental action and community involvement.
-
Programs are designed to strengthen transferable workforce and leadership skills, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, leadership, and self-confidence. Participants gain experience working collaboratively, speaking publicly, and taking on responsibility in both educational and professional settings.
-
Bee U NYC tracks whether participation in programs influences students’ educational and career interests, particularly within the green economy. This includes measuring increased awareness of environmental careers, interest in pursuing related education or training opportunities, and whether participants feel more prepared to explore career pathways connected to sustainability, environmental justice, and workforce development.
